Assisted Suicide Is Against God's Sixth Commandment
Assisted Suicide Is Against God's Sixth Commandment
I received the following email from a constituent in 65B whom we will call X.
Dear Kevin,
I am a voter in your district and support authorizing medical aid in dying in Minnesota. I believe that terminally ill adults of sound mind should be able to receive, from their doctor, a medication they can self-ingest for a peaceful death if their suffering becomes unbearable (like Oregon’s Death with Dignity law).
I am the parent of an adult diagnosed with ALS and am part of a large cohort of parents, spouses, other family and friends who are very concerned about our loved ones suffering unnecessarily. In Minnesota, these pALS (people with ALS) do not have the option to end their suffering (and believe me their suffering is worse than anyone can imagine) as do pALS in states like Oregon.
A majority of Minnesotans (68-73%) support access to this compassionate end-of-life option. I believe that every person should be able to make end-of-life medical decisions that are consistent with their values and priorities and best for them and their families.
If elected, will you support legislation to authorize medical aid in dying? I look forward to your response.
Thank you.
X

Dear X
The sixth commandment clearly lays out God's law concerning any killing including suicide.
I cannot support any legislation that would permit anyone to take their own life!
I furthermore cannot support any legislation that would permit anyone to aid anyone else in taking their own life!
Sincerely,
Kevin Fjelsted
Historically when people have substituted another system of laws for God's law, the entire fabric of society collapses soon afterwards!
In taking this to prayer I was struck by the parallels that evoked a very strong response from God in Daniel chapter 5. At the core of the human response by the kings and Nobles in Daniel's time, are two keys that stand out to me.
When we try and replace God's commandments with our own ideas, those who are responsible, will be found wanting by God and replaced!
God never changes! There is no way that we as God's children created in his image can conflate or redefine God's law without consequences!
